From an article by Steve Trobovic in the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia’s July 2003 Quick Release newsletter:

The newly formed Pennsylvania Bicycle Access Council (BAC) sponsored its first weekend bike rally, June 13-15, in Lewisburg, PA, about a three-hour drive from Philadelphia.  Three BCP members attended.  Howie Wiener, Arnie Roseman and myself.  Although lightly attended (just over fifty riders), it was an all around success.  Much more was offered (for the same price) and it was much better run than the last two LAB sponsored rallies that I attended in 2001 and 2002.  Accommodations were excellent.  We were booked in an upscale Best Western just north of town, rather than a college dorm.  All rides started and ended there.  Many routes were offered with varied terrain; short and entirely flat; longer moderately hilly.

Hard to believe, but the weather cooperated and allowed the three of us to ride every day.  The four routes that we rode, covering 125 miles, took us along some of the finest rural Pennsylvania country side that I have ever biked.

Our package included a banquet, two full breakfasts and a catered picnic.  We were entertained with a magic show put on by a member of the Lancaster Bicycle Club.  Guest speakers from the Chambers of Commerce of Union and Lycoming counties warmly welcomed us and told us about the 500 miles plus continuous biking/hiking trail being developed along the Susquehanna Valley from the New York border to Maryland.  Effective Cycling author John Forester spoke about his mission to reform LAB and the need for bicycles and cars to share the same roads using the same rules.

Joe Stafford, BAC president, has worked hard long to establish BAC as a statewide bicycle advocacy organization.  Over the last two years, he has spoken at a number of BCP events and at other local club meetings.  He regularly attends the PENNDOT Bike Task Force meetings, and other such gatherings, advocating issues to improve the roads for cyclists.  This rally was a first attempt to bring cyclists, from all parts of Pennsylvania together.  We think the rally will be run again next summer and we encourage you to participate.

The BCP executive committee supports his efforts, and I sincerely hope that many of our members will do the same.

NOTE:  This was an unsolicited article written by Steve Trobovic for his bike club newsletter.

Thank you, Steve—Joe Stafford, Bicycle Access Council Executive Director.
