FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A New Organization for Pennsylvania

August 3-5, 2001

Bicycle Access Council has launched its first membership drive at the League of American Bicyclists bikefest2001 rally in Altoona, Pennsylvania, August 3-5. As a new statewide advocacy non-profit organization, Executive Director, Joe Stafford presented the mission statement and objectives for Pennsylvania bicyclists.

"With a bicycling Governor and a cooperative Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania is ready to highlight the rights of bicyclists on the roadway," says Stafford.  He adds, "Except for a few regional organizations and bike clubs, the voices of bicyclists across the state are not heard or represented. There was no constituency to work directly with PennDOT--Now there is."

Following the lead of BIKES BELONG, Stafford says that the way to get more support for bicycling is to get more bikes on the road. "I have a clear vision of how to increase bicycling awareness throughout the Commonwealth." Funding will come through memberships at a single level. Grants for specific programs to educate bicyclists and the motoring public will be applied for as needed. An application for recognition as a 501(c)3 organization is pending.
