April 10, 2013: The Bicycle Access Council launched a new campaign to create a Pennsylvania Share-The-Road license plate. An appeal letter for a legislative sponsor and co-sponsor was delivered to a select number of state House and Senate members--74 in all. To see a copy of the letter, click here.  A list of those General Assembly members contacted may be found in the April 2013 BAC News & Digest issue. Bicyclists are urged to contact their House members and Senators by phone, e-mail or a personally drafted letter to ask for their support, whether on the list or not. BAC requests to be included by way of a hard copy or cc when individuals or bicycle clubs contact their legislators.

On April 23, an alert on several Internet listserves reported yet another verbal attack against bicyclists by a morning radio team in Atlanta on WNNX (99X).  As the internet messages heated up over this, 99X was identified to be an affiliate radio station of the parent company, Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff, which is headquartered in York, PA.  

I immediately posted a message on one of those listserves offering help in contacting the parent company and presenting the issue on behalf of the Atlanta metro area bicyclists.  All they had to do was ask and gather the information to forward to me.  It was almost a week before someone from the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign contacted me asking for assistance.  Next, the Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) saw the BAC posting and asked to coordinate efforts. 

Seizing the hometown advantage, discussions with two corporate vice-presidents were completed to strategize a meeting with the President/COO of the Susquehanna Radio Division of Pfaltzgraff.  By the time that meeting took place, which was arranged in less than three business days, the tone was set for the response by the Susquehanna Radio Division and the direction it gave to the Atlanta affiliate station management. 

The LAB was invited to attend the meeting held in York once it was scheduled.  Fortunately, Patrick McCormick, LAB's Director of Communications, was available that day and made hasty arrangements to travel to the York meeting. We worked as a great team sharing statewide and national perspectives of bicyclists' rights on the roadway.  It was for the "greater good" that the LAB receive the Susquehanna Radio response letter to be used by the Atlanta advocates while negotiating with the 99X station management for Public Service Announcements and future bicycling promotions.
